Copper

Carlos Punzo Chávez
Santa Clara de Cobre, Michoacán

In Santa Clara del Cobre, where the sound of hammering is part of everyday life, Carlos Punzo Chávez carries forward a deeply rooted communal tradition. He began learning the craft at the age of six under the guidance of his father, Grand Master of Folk Art Abdón Punzo Ángel, developing a profound connection with copper as a living, everchanging material.

Today, alongside his brothers, he sustains and reinterprets this family legacy through works that merge traditional techniques with innovative approaches. His practice reflects not only inherited knowledge, but also an active commitment to teaching, community engagement, and the preservation of one of Michoacán’s most emblematic crafts.
