Maria Arcelia Barbero Gómez
Mezquitic, Jalisco

María Arcelia Barbero Gómez is the creator of the distinctive karpastado mirror technique, transforming discarded mirror fragments into original works of art since 1996. Every mirror is handcrafted entirely by Arcelia—from cutting and shaping the wooden frame to designing each piece and applying her unique karpastado mixture, a technique she developed with French artist Pierre Ourly. Her work reflects a deep commitment to creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship.

An artist since childhood, Arcelia studied Fine Arts in Xalapa, Veracruz, and later traveled internationally while producing an award-nominated animated film inspired by the traditional Jarocho musicians of Veracruz. Today, she creates mirrors in an extraordinary variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and designs, blending traditional Mexican artistry with contemporary style. Her innovative vision and original techniques have established her work as a truly unique expression of Mexican folk art.
