Grupo Ben Tsam, Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas

Simona Gómez López was raised by her aunt, Doña Juliana, the ceramist who created the famous doves of Amatenango del Valle and one of the first women to depart from the traditional figures made in the town. Doña Juliana passed away in 2015 at the age of 82, leaving her daughter and niece as heirs to her tradition. As a tribute, a statue of her was erected at the entrance of San Cristobal de las Casas, when she was still alive.

Simona is known for the water jars she makes as well as other vessels and also for the doves similar to those made by her aunt. She also makes Mayan incense burners, but with a more contemporary design.

A group of family and friends along with Simona formed the Ben Tsam group in order to join forces for the benefit of all. The group's sales benefit approximately 35 families. They make jaguars, doves and any other designs that are commissioned to Simona.

Simona attended the Vatican in December 2015 as part of a group that represented Chiapas presenting handicrafts for the Christmas season.
